Amy Reed
President/Head Coach

As a former Division I athlete and veteran NCAA coach, regularly examining how Amy led herself and others were vital components to her success and fulfillment throughout her career. As she reflected on the early parts of her career as a coach, Amy attached herself to old, authoritarian leadership paradigms including impossibly high standards without flexibility, aversion to authentic relationship building in the name of keeping a "healthy distance" from her team, and ashamedly subscribed to blaming others and making excuses when things didn't go her way or a particular goal wasn't reached. In-office venting became the norm as she remained puzzled as to why her team wasn't successful.

She started working with a coach, prompting her to take a hard look in the mirror and examine how she showed up as a leader and how her team perceived her. Throughout this self-discovery process, it didn’t take long for her to recognize that she was the problem! At first, she was in complete denial and didn’t want to take ownership of her team’s culture and success. Amy learned the hard way that regardless of how you think you are showing up as a leader, perception is reality. She knew she had to start leading differently because what she was doing wasn’t working.

Amy started to become more self-aware through regular reflection and creating action items for how she would begin to change. She spent less time on strategy and focused on authentic relationship building, spending intentional time developing and empowering team leaders, and co-creating a thriving team culture with her athletes. She trusted her staff to deliver on her vision for the team and spent most of her time investing in and learning deeply about who her athletes were as people and what they cared about. She started having fun at work again!

Changing who she was on the inside had a significant impact on external results. Amy's program went from never winning to becoming a perennial NCAA Top 25 team within two years. They went to the NCAA tournament three times including a trip to the Sweet 16. Although the wins and the experience of competing on a national stage were incredible and something she will never forget, the close personal relationships she had and still has today with her former athletes far exceed any of those achievements.

As much as she loved being a college coach and is grateful for everything it has taught her, Amy began to sense a higher soul calling during the last few years of her coaching career. She began to wonder what would happen if she could take her experience as a high level athlete and coach and help leaders everywhere tap into their highest and best selves and ultimately, accelerate and optimize their team’s performance and sense of purpose.

Amy sensed there must be other leaders out there who feel stuck, overwhelmed or even unsure of how they want to show up and lead themselves and their teams. After nearly twenty years of coaching at the collegiate level, she took a leap of faith, resigned from her position, became a Professional Certified Coach, and State of Mind Executive Coaching was born.

Amy helps leaders in a variety of industries connect to their highest and best selves so they gain more freedom and free up space for strategy, vision, and creativity. She works with leaders to create awareness and explore how they show up energetically based upon their habits and behaviors and helps them create a plan based upon where they are now and where they want to be. When leaders work to shift towards more productive thoughts, behaviors and habits, they can create a career and life of balance, joy, and fulfillment!

energy leadership

change the way you view the world, approach challenges, and relate to others

How an individual perceives, acknowledges, and relates to the rest of the world is first revealed in the Energy Leadership Index (ELI) Assessment. By identifying where and how you're investing your energy, you'll be able to take action, prioritize your work and life goals, and live a life of purpose and fulfilment. These insights paired with coaching often boost engagement, productivity, communication, and morale among employees. Individually, watch your relationships transform, your confidence levels increase, and your leadership presence resonate on a whole new level.

seven levels of energy

There are two forms of energy that are key to the Energy Leadership approach that we apply when working with clients. Catabolic energy (destructive energy) is at one end of the spectrum, while anabolic (building energy) is at the other. Individuals who are unaware of their own leadership style tend to reside in catabolic mode. When an individual spends most of their time in catabolic thoughts or behaviors, achieving goals and having influence over others is nearly impossible.

We work with clients to identify how they are showing up energetically as a leader and help them move toward more constructive thoughts and behaviors, ultimately enabling them to achieve their goals. Below is a brief explanation of the 7 levels of energy people fluctuate between every single day. Although there is fluidity in how individuals show up energetically, the level you spend the most time in throughout the day determines your predominant leadership style.

what level are you?

level 1: victim

This is the lowest form of destructive or catabolic energy where individuals are at the effect of life and not the cause. "I can't catch a break," or "Why does this always happen to me?" are common thoughts.

level 3: responsibility

This is the first level of anabolic or building energy. Individuals begin to take ownership of their part. They may explain why they did something, but overall judgment and blame diminishes.

level 5: reconciliation

Some of the world's greatest leaders reside in Level 5 energy. They see every challenge as an opportunity and look for a "win-win" in every situation.

level 2: conflict

Predominant energy found in a workplace setting. High levels of frustration, anger, and blame are commonplace. This catabolic energy level often shows up in the form of constant struggle and "putting out fires."

level 4: concern

Most leaders who find themselves at this level believe strongly in teamwork and put others before themselves. Lack of acknowledgment may lead to shifts into Level 1 energy periodically.

level 6: synthesis

Leaders at this level see the world as a whole picture rather than the sum of its parts. They are some of the most creative, optimistic individuals out there.

level 7: non-judgment

The highest resonating energy level where winning and losing are non-existent. This is often referred to as the "flow state".
